David and Jonathan Dimbleby are supporting a new fundraising appeal today to complete the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital where Dimbleby Cancer Care will continue to provide support and information for patients.

The ‘laying of the foundation stone’ ceremony (Tuesday 13 May) signaled the next phase of construction.

Dimbleby Cancer Care already has facilities at both Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals including free practical and psychological support and drop-in centres to help cancer patients and carers to find the information they need, and provides specially designed pillows for patients being treated for cancer.

When the new Cancer Centre opens at Guy’s in 2016, these facilities will be brought together under one roof with the majority of cancer treatment and research to improve the care of cancer patients and their families.

Dimbleby Cancer Care has already made a generous grant of £2 million to the new Centre.

David Dimbleby, President of Dimbleby Cancer Care, says: “Today is a significant day for Dimbleby Cancer Care as it marks the beginning of a very exciting time for the charity.

“We have been long-term supporters of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and at the forefront of cancer support care for nearly 50 years. The building of this Centre will make sure we remain there for the foreseeable future so we urge everyone to support Guy’s Cancer Centre Appeal.”

Jonathan Dimbleby, Chair of Dimbleby Cancer Care, adds: “Our backing of the Appeal will help to ensure the continuation of our charity’s work supporting people living with cancer and their families.

“As a charity ourselves, we rely on the generosity of the general public to fundraise for us so we can continue our work and support fantastic projects such as this which will have a positive impact on the quality of cancer care in the UK.”

Professor Arnie Purushotham, Director of the King’s Health Partners Integrated Cancer Centre, adds: “Together we aspire to be not only one of the leading comprehensive cancer centres in the UK but also one of the best in the world.”
