2011 Research Awards Announced

With so little funding available for research into the psychosocial and practical needs of people with cancer, Dimbleby Cancer Care Research Fund finds itself inundated with bids each year.  Shortlisting is increasingly difficult, and this year was no exception, with nearly 100 initial bids.  From a shortlist of ten applicants – all of whose bids were of a very high standard – the Advisory Board chose three for funding:

1.  Improving psychological support by District Nurses in palliative home care: a pilot study of a communication skills tool (Dr Jane Griffiths, University of Manchester)

2.  Maintaining psychological well-being in advanced illness: What can we learn from patients’ and carers’ own coping strategies? (Dr Catherine Walshe, University of Manchester)

3  Sharing bad news: development of an intervention to support patients with cancer share the news of their diagnosis with significant others (Dr Gail Ewing, University of Cambridge)
