A host of performers from the world of entertainment joined us to bring some festive cheer to Bermondsey Street on Monday night as David Dimbleby hosted our annual Carols by Candlelight evening.
To mark the arrival of the festive season over 200 people joined David at the church of St Mary Magdalen for an evening of Christmas readings and songs, led by Farringtons School Choir. The Service was followed by a drinks reception and mince pies.
Special guests included actors Simon Callow who read from A Christmas Carol, and Annette Badland who read Tennyson’s Ring Out, Loud Bells. There were also readings and performances from beneficiaries of the charity’s work as well as a special performance from Kate Dimbleby with Rebecca Hollwegg and Andy Hamill.
The event raised more than £3,000.
Host for the evening, David Dimbleby, said: “50 years ago we founded the charity as we saw a gap in the lack of care provided during cancer treatment. We were pioneers of this and the work we do in this field. To put it simply; the anguish people go through objectifies them in the NHS but what we offer is a human touch and a hand to hold for people living with cancer and coming out the other side. We offer everything from information and advice, complementary therapies, counselling and welfare benefits advice. That’s what we were supporting last night so a huge thank you to everyone who came and took part, we really are grateful.”
