Current research projects

2007

In April 2007, the Dimbleby Cancer Care Advisory Board awarded research funding to the following projects:

  • Dr Andrew Wilcock, Nottingham University Hospitals.
    Realising the benefits of physical activity for people with incurable cancer, to develop an exercise therapy programme that would be acceptable and practicable. (1 year)
  • Professor Leslie Walker, Institute of Rehabilitation, University of Hull
    A feasibility study of relaxation therapy plus autohypnotherapy (HYPREL) for patients with thoracic cancer undergoing radiotherapy. (1.5 years)
  • Dr Christopher Bailey, University of Southampton.
    Care at the end of life: experience and support needs of older family caregivers of people with advanced cancer. (2 years)
  • Professor Nicky Britten, Peninsula Medical School.
    A qualitative synthesis of the use of complementary and alternative medicine after diagnosis of cancer. (1 year)

2006

In March 2006, the Dimbleby Cancer Care Advisory Board awarded research funding to the following projects.

Preferred place of death: factors influencing actual versus preferred place of death and the decision making process (18 months)

• Maggie Evans, Academic Unit of Primary Care, Bristol
Complementary therapies and supportive cancer care: towards integration and holistic care? A qualitative study of patients and professionals (2 years)

• Professor Sheila Payne, Lancaster University
Ethnicity and cancer: examining psychosocial transitions for older people (2 years)

• Dr Marc Serfaty, Royal Free and University College Medical School, London
Helping with touch or talk (ToT); feasibility of a randomised controlled trial to examine the clinical and cost effectiveness of aromatherapy massage versus cognitive behaviour therapy in patients in cancer/palliative care. (2 years)

• Dr Gunn Grande, School of Nursing Midwifery & Social Work, Manchester University
Predictors of patients’ use of cancer support groups: a prospective study (3 years)

• Dr Louise Jones, Royal Free and University College Medical School, London
Advance care planning in Advanced Cancer; can it be achieved? A patient preference trial of a care planning discussion. (2 years).
