Researching areas others don't
Dimbleby Cancer Care has two arms of research – both in areas that few others fund
Dimbleby Cancer Care Research Fund
(for application details, see the foot of this page)
Less than 5% of all cancer research funding is spent on researching the care needs of cancer patients, their carers and families, and how best to deliver them.
With more of us living longer with cancer we believe it is vital that cancer care is improved and made universally available through better research. Dimbleby Cancer Care spends up to £0.5 million per year in this area, making us one of the largest charitable funders in this vital field.
Whether through looking at why some people are reluctant to join cancer support groups, the problems experienced by older carers, or the challenges of sharing cancer information with children, Dimbleby Cancer Care is actively funding research most others don’t.
See the foot of this page for information on how to apply for research funding.
Richard Dimbleby Chair of Cancer Research
Through an endowment at King’s College London we support ground breaking research into cancer treatment. Professor Ng and his team are one of only ten in the world working on imaging techniques to identify which drugs will best benefit individual patients.
Applications
We welcome applications from anyone whose proposed research fits the following criteria:
- leads to a better understanding of the support needs of patients, and their families and carers, from diagnosis through treatment, to recovery or end of life - and to discover how these needs can best be met
- offers improved psychosocial care to patients, their families and carers
- facilitates better communication and continuity of care throughout a patient's cancer journey
- tests the efficacy of, and improve, existing support strategies
The application process takes place once a year. It involves completing and submitting an initial short application form.
The initial applications are considered by our Advisory Board and a shortlist is drawn up. (To find out who is on our Advisory Board, click here).
